I had six stitches in the middle of my forehead. Black ones. Like gum patches on a boat, they kept the blood inside my head. Most of it. They also left a distinct Harry Potter-style scar five inches above my nostrils. This was pre-Harry Potter. And with my puffy red jacket that functioned more like a sail than a body warmer, I was ready for our family portrait.
I was 10.
I must confess, the absence of ski poles in the era of the pizza stance was crippling. Bone-chilling gusts pierced Killington – and my puffball jacket. I mostly just sailed off the slope – out of frame.
“Get back here!”
“I don’t have poles!”
(Shuffle, shuffle, slide…)
But I was happy as a four-foot, three-inch clam. I was on the mountain!
Whether it’s the perspective-yielding elevation, the calm of swollen powder, or the way the air tightens, thins, and pops your ears at altitude, there’s nothing like it. And as orange-red November hardens into white-blue December, we’re smiling ear to ear at The Inertia. Because, now, we’re on the mountain, too. It’s been a long time coming.
Today, we’re thrilled to announce our expansion into the mountain and snow community, where we’ll apply our best-in-class brand of storytelling and innovative tastemaker platform to a new world of outdoor enthusiasts. Starting in a San Clemente bedroom in 2010, we’ve grown from dirt into a passionate, engaged community of 1 million+ monthly readers, and we’ve always hoped that the platform we’ve poured our heart and soul into might have application beyond surfing.
Today, it does. And you’ll be hearing from a host of thought leaders in the mountain and snow community who have joined our cause to share of themselves in the same way timeless icons like Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, and Art Brewer have shared their passions on The Inertia.
Today, Jeremy Jones advocates his unflinching commitment to Protect Our Winters, Barrett Christy, the all-time winningest woman in X-Games history, shares her thoughts on women’s evolving role in snow and mountain culture, and Jeff Curtes unveils trademark epic imagery that has inspired readers for more than twenty years alongside breathtaking imagery from Laura Austin, whose singular style leads the way for what’s to come. But that’s just the beginning. We’ve got amazing projects and contributors in store, and we’re purposefully cultivating a diverse global community of talented snowboarders, skiers, mountain climbers, and beyond – embracing the vast diversity of mountain enthusiasts in the same spirit we’ve embraced a wide spectrum of watermen and women over the last four years. And to reassure our loyal base of passionate surfers, this evolution comes not at the expense of our commitment to surfing. Far from it. We’ve added best-in-class staff to reinforce our offerings across the board, and we view the broadening of The Inertia’s lens as a natural and welcome step in our evolution. We don’t do labels. We’re a platform for the inspired, and we’re especially excited to partner with Mammoth as the official home base and ground zero of The Inertia Mountain.
We love being outside. Period. When waves pulse, we surf. When snow falls, we get amongst it. And we are equally, if not more, passionate about connecting people and telling stories that resonate – creating a place where individuals who love the outdoors wear their hearts on their sleeves.
We’re ten again. Four-feet tall with rosy red cheeks – brimming with excitement at the world in front of us despite bone-chilling wind and a stupid jacket. We’re excited for new stitches. New blood. New family portraits.

Best family portrait ever? I’m the little mistake on the far right.
